I stumbled upon this today on Time Magazine’s website via Jezebel. It’s a Q&A with Rachel Simmons, author of Odd Girl Out: The Hidden Culture of Aggression in Girls. Her latest book, The Curse of the Good Girl: Raising Authentic Girls with Courage and Confidence, is getting quite a bit of press. One passage in [...]

The location has changed:

Critically acclaimed author of Zanesville, Kris Saknussemm, will be appearing in Austin in support of his latest release, Private Midnight, this Friday. Event details are at the top of the poster.
Saknussemm’s literature is kooky, edgy and definitely not G-rated. But, he’s a brilliant writer and I highly recommend you check out this [...]

It is a truth universally acknowledged that Jane Austen’s books would’ve been better with zombies. Looks like we’re finally getting lucky on that front.

In less than a decade, Racamier had turned Louis Vuitton from a small family business that sold to an elite clientele to a powerful, publicily traded brand with substantial sales and even more potential. By merging it into an existing and stable corporate group, and then by adding Givenchy to create a luxury fashion division, [...]

Hog Butcher for the World,

Something clicked. She wasn’t a gullible follower of those mandates and routines, some rube from West Virginia or was it regular Virginia trying to turn herself into a soulless, win-at-any-cost shark. She was taking a buzz saw to the rule, pointing out the absurd contradictions, the glib b.s. of corporate culture.
That no one suspected Jill [...]

Just read this stunning article on Breitbart discussing some disparaging comments made by the Nobel Academy’s permanent secretary, Horace Engdahl. Apparently, Engdahl doesn’t feel that the U.S. has much to offer in the way of literary contributions. Per the interview with the AP:
“Speaking generally about American literature, however, he said U.S. writers are ‘too sensitive [...]

I don’t think I can do this novel the proper justice it deserves. Louise Erdrich is one of my favorite novelists, forever and ever, amen. But, she’s truly outdone her entire canon of literature with this one. The spooky opening chapter sets the stage for the novel; in 1911 a family is murdered with the [...]

As per my habit for the last few years, I’ve made my summer reading list:
Deluxe: How Luxury Lost It’s Luster by Dana Thomas
In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto by Michael Pollan
The Plague of Doves by Louise Erdrich
Lush Life by Richard Price
I think that should keep me occupied for the months ahead.
